the thing about purim

not to jump on the bandwagon of purim bashers, but I would like to know if I am the only one who, in the past several years, have noticed a tremendous upsurge in the amount of SHNORRING that goes on.

You cant walk 5 feet without being accosted by a schnorrer, many times some snotnosed kid with his hand out pretending to be drunk and thinking its cute to demand MONEY.
I dont find it cute.

It's almost like thats the thing to do: on Pesach you eat matza, on Simchas Torah you dance and on Purim you collect!

The only other thing I can think of, is that if you are collecting, you dont have to give. Therefore to avoid being collected from, you get a nice warm mushy "tzedaka case" and go out there and collect yourself!

You seriously need to chill out! Just relax! If you don't want to give the money, then guess what? YOU DON'T HAVE TO!
Just let the kids enjoy themselves and be happy for them. Why do their Purim activities make you sour?
And by the way, you are right, on Pesach we eat Matzoh, as is says in the Torah, and on Purim we give Tzedakah, as it says in Chazal, "Kol haposhet yad, nosnim lo."

while there certainly are more and more collectors...there are also more and more of us..so its probably in proportion..
And it is one of the mitzvos of the day..Kol Haposhet Yad Nosein..
nd since its yom kippurim..we can only hope that Hashem acts the same with us..
when all of us shnorrers come to him for handouts..

Sorry, I disagree with this post 1000%

As long as you are on the "giving" side of things you need to thank God for that!

Nothing bad can happen from giving Tzedakah!

i think you guys missed her point entirely... she wants to give proper tzdakah...just not to "snotnosed kid with his hand out pretending to be drunk and thinking its cute to demand MONEY. "

And this is the main problem... it's no longer just the needy that ask on purim, it's become a minhag for all kinds of kids to just ask for money FOR THEMSELVES!!!! cuz it is Purim

thank you Almost frei

that was my point. I am all in favor of tzedaka, and like lakevent says, thank g-d giving and not receiving (although i wish I could give more)
However, these kids can get obnoxious about it.
and its also the idea that we are teaching a generation of kids that shnorring is a way of life.
my son once came home from school and asked me for a pushka, he wanted to go collecting. When I asked him why, he told me he wants money!!
Okay he was six years old, but i was pretty shocked at his train of thought.

although af, I dont think most kids are collecting for themselves.

I will concede the point that if you determine that the one asking for money is a kid who will probably go buy some smokes with it rather than pass it on to charity, then you don't have to give him!

It can be annoying, but doing a Mitzvah when hard earns greater reward.

Be Thankful that your not a man. In shul this morning I counted 44 people that came collecting to me when I was davening. All types. Older men, young snot nosed kids, and everything in between. Do you know how many I gave? Exactly 3! The rest? I just smiled at them and they moved on.
The point is,it's just part of what Purim. Just take it in stride.

What are you guys so poor and lazy that you can't afford to get 200 singles before purim to give all those who ask? Most are in desperate need and rely to a great extent on purim.Be happy its one day a year they are aproaching you this way. Those in need suffer every day all year round.Have racmonis. Please people need and rely on you.
PS do you want all your kids schools to start charging tuition the full amount it costs to educate your child and tell you we are just fed up and have too many parents who make us scnorrer for them.
