Sometimes I think I think too much...

Sunday, June 10, 2007

I was talking to a 19 year old girl,(lets call her Leah) who is (sadly) finding out some of the unfairness and hypocrisy that goes on in UO society. To be specific:
Girl #1, lets call her Sara, grew up in a frum family where the father is still learning, the mother works once or twice a week, but one of the grandparents apparently has alot of money, so they have a very comfortable lifestyle. Sara's father hand picks the best chassan he can find for Sara - alla maalos, and mazel tov - theyre engaged! Big wedding, expensive gown, and everything...
They will be moving to Israel for five years, which of course means full support. They have an apartment in Israel that will be costing them a mere $1200.00 a month blah blah blah. Sara gets the learning boy, and the kollel life without having to sacrifice a thing.
Now we have Leah, who comes from a modest family, who may have to even pay for part of her own wedding expenses. She would like to marry a learning boy, too, and she is very willing to live with mesiras nefesh , work, and sacrifice some comfort for that goal, but sadly, she is not likely to get the learning boy at all, because her dad is not in a position to support her like Sara's dad (grandad) is. The eligible bachelors will likely find more "Saras" before they even consider Leah. She feels the unfairness of it - she , who is happy to live with mesiras nefesh is not going to get the learning boy , while Sara is.

Mega,
I think this is one of those urban myths. The idea that learning boys prefer girls with money happens as often as they look for pretty girls, good yichus girls etc.

I don't think 'Leah' is at any bigger disadvantage in terms of finding her mate, than a 'plain' girl, or a girl 'suffering' from any other mishugas that too many people unfortunately focus on.

Mega,
Although the picture you paint is true of any society;someone who was born with money and other good things will have an easier and better time in life then someone who wasn't, in this particular case I don't think your picture is totally true.A 'shallow' girl with lots of money MAY have an easier time getting boys serious about learning to go out with her, but not to actually marry her.
Anyhow I can't imagine that Tiferas Devorah L'kallah only helps girls whose husbands will be working.

Unfairness? For almost six thousand years, people with money have been able to get much more things (including spouses of their choice) than those without. Complain to Creator why he set up the world like that. If anything, the disparity between rich and poor is less now than it has been historically.

Hypocrisy? Where's the hypocricy?

(BTW, what is "UO society"?)

good points, everyone. There have always been privileged people and poor ones. I will forward this to "Leah" and hopefully she will feel better!

Let Leah find a decent, hard working guy who earns a living (gasp!) and makes time each day to learn as well. In the long run she will be happier and more fulfilled than Sara. Guaranteed.

Let me say something very politically uncorrect for a change.. lol.. Maybe Leah can marry an Ohr Someyach boy who will probably be a bigger masmid, bigger baal middos, and quite possibly treat her a whole lot better then the self-centered jokers lining up for the Saras...

this learning business has exploded dangerously. All i can hope for is that ppl realize the stupidity and selfishness of the so called "learning boy" who demands so much. Our previous gedolim NEVER EVER lived (or even imagined) the lifestyles of these holy learning boys. Why ask for it? why would any LEAH be so blinded ?
